A Reflection On Thanksgiving

I would like to take this moment to remember the Thanksgiving season and all the wonders it possessed. There's nothing like a holiday where we represent our blessings with a feast, one where we can all come together in friendship and family, forgetting our squabbles and crusades against one another and agree to appreciate all the things we have been given.

In fact, I feel this last Thanksgiving season we all came together in a way we have not before. As literally tens of millions of Americans have lost their jobs and homes over the last 3-4 years, I feel this was a perfect time for people all over America to see firsthand what loss is and remembering their blessings, come out and publicly celebrate and be thankful, humbly for all that we have.

And I feel those of us who have jobs or a livelihood were given a wake up call as to what we took for granted. In retrospect, we all had time to be thankful for what we did have and hold dear or valuable those things that our parents and their parents worked so hard to provide for us. The things people devote their lives to inventing and the things hard working people devote their energy to producing and bringing to us the very blessed.

And in our contentness, that righteous attribute of Godliness, we come to the realization that the most valuable things in life are not material, but the things eternal. And in recognition of the truly valuable things in life we seek not to turn to more things, but to be content with the blessings we have.

And in doing so we turn away from a culture of greed and consumerism, but rather to a culture of giving and heartfelt contentness. And in doing so we gather together in large groups to remember what we have and impress upon our culture that we are grateful and that in all hardships what we have is enough, taking time to honor and remember those without the basic blessings of daily necessities.

Meditating on those who are without we embrace our universal humanity and recognize the value in each other. Its a time to realize how important it is to attend to our fellow man and not think just of ourselves.

So I say to you Happy Thanksgiving. May all the joy of the holiday season and goodness of humanity shine on you and the American people.
